X prepares to launch investment features

X, in Elon Musk’s vision, is to become a full-fledged finance platform by including investment and trading features directly into its app, a move that falls under its mission to become a “super app.” The move was announced by CEO Linda Yaccarino at the Cannes Lions conference, an ambitious move to bring financial services into the social media app, according to the Financial Times.

The new capability, which is for now going by the name X Money, will roll out in the United States initially, enabling users to hold value, make payments, send money between users, and even invest with a few clicks. The step is a huge leap for X in its efforts to match the capabilities of WeChat, from messaging to payment, e-commerce, and even personal finance. The evolution of the platform from a mere social network to a full-fledged financial platform is the realization of Musk’s vision of an “everything app.”

X Money was first previewed by CEO Linda Yaccarino in January 2025 with early focus on a digital wallet in partnership with Visa. The pitch has included pay features, tipping creators, and even purchasing merchandise on the platform. A branded debit or credit card is even underway for later this year. While cryptocurrency inclusion has not been announced, X has already added Bitcoin tipping via the Lightning Network and real-time digital asset prices via Cashtags. Visa’s ongoing deal-making with influential crypto industry players, such as World, also fuels speculation that cryptocurrencies will be part of X’s financial services.

But this ambition for being a true financial platform is plagued with very serious regulatory issues. Issuance of licenses and anti-money laundering provisions are of paramount importance. X has already secured money transmission licenses for a number of U.S. states and is working on securing the remaining 50 states. This is a regulatory issue of very substantial importance to the success of the platform since it is in the highly regulated domain of the financial services business.

X is about to launch the investment feature, but MevX users have been trading meme coins on X for months now. Check out MevX Extension for the secret.
